Episode Two
The second episode of Capture with Mark Seliger featured Albert Watson and Lauren Bush. During the episode they all talk about various images that Watson and Bush has taken. The images are powerful and are well known.
When Albert Watson was talking about his first image on the series, it was of Alfred Hitchcock. The image was of Hitchcock holding a dead duck. The story of the image was what i found most interesting. Watson was called by a magazine company to photographer Hitchcocl, however this was Watsons first time photographing a famous person. Therefore he wanted to connect with Hitchcock because that why it would make the atmosphere more comfortable. The reason that Hitchcock was actually holding a dead duck was becuae he was a chef and not many people knew that. H ewas especially known for the way he cooked duck, therefore to bring some personal elements into the shoot Watson decided to photograph he with a duck. I thought this was so clever and different. Normally when you see a portrait its just of a persons head and shoulders, whereas this portrait conveys a secret meaning of Hitchcock which some people may only see as its relevant to his career in the film industry (horror films).
Other photographs that were discussed by Watson was a famous image of Christy Turlington. The photographed was taken at a time where Christy was a smoker therefore in the image she was smoking. At the time she liked the imgage however, to this day she doesn't like the image as much because of the fact that she no longer smokes and is a healthier peson. I personally liked the photograph as it was in black and white which gave it depth and texture.
Watson then went on to talk about a project that the Prince of Morocco (now the king) wanted him to do. The project was to make a book of morocco. Watson said the project was successful considering he only had 34 days to complete it. I thought this was a rather strange project but it sound exciting because you are challenged with a time limit.
Mick Jagger was another person that Watson photographed. The images include Mick Jagger and a leopard. He talks about the circumsances they were in whilst shooting and how the leopard was dangerous so they had to find a way to make the image work wihtout anyone being harmed. My favourite image of Watsons was the one where the leopards and mich jaggers faces's were combined in one photograph, they were overlapping each other so the leopard looked more human. I thought this was very creative and it was done with a analog camera which is even better becausethat would be harder. Watson at first thought it was over exposed so he wasnt looking forward to the roll coming back but it was only when it di come back that he saw there was 4 imagesthat were perfectly alligned together.
Lauren Bush talked about her travels around the world and how she loves photography. Laurens images were basedin Less Developed Countries which i found interesting however i knew it is quite a popular subject to photograph. Many of Laurens images were shot in black and white. I found this interesting because to me i feel that black and white makes a subject have more depth and it makes you think about it more rather than in standard colour.
Most of the subejcts were people in poor countries. I think this was to convey the difference of lifestyles that she lives compared to what they live. She decribes the places and being dark (not literally but for the sense that it is a country that is seen as broke and people live with horrifying circumstances).
Overall i took more interst into Alan Watson than i did to Lauren Bush because i feel that Watson hasbrought images to the table which ive never seen before and are interesting whereas i feel that all of Lauren Bush'images are ones that are highly similar to thousands of other photographs, they all look the same to me.
